MADDY'S BAT MITZVAH

Last weekend I traveled to McLean, VA to shoot Maddy's bat mitzvah. I hadn't met her before we did the bimah portraits so I was unsure how the shoot would go. It's hard to be 13 and have to get up in front of a large group of people and speak a different language; some kids are really nervous and anxious and it shows in the photos and other kids just roll with it (and it also shows in the photos). Maddy was unbelievably poised. When she started chanting her torah portion, I was stunned - she didn't chant so much as she sang it. And it was beautiful. I've never heard a bar or bat mitzvah sound like she did and I asked her mom if she was a singer. Turns out she isn't. Just ridiculously, insanely talented. And beautiful. Wow.
