Finding the Moments That Define Your Event

KATHERINE'S BAT MITZVAH / Temple Rodef Shalom, Falls Church, VA

I got to know Rodef Shalom pretty well last weekend ~ Katherine had her bat mitzvah and reception there on Saturday but we also did bimah portraits earlier in the week and I shot the shabbat dinner the Friday night before.  I now have the Rodef Shalom address programmed into my GPS as an alternate home address. What can I say about Katherine and her family?  Katherine was poised and polished and even though she said she was nervous, I didn't see it during rehearsal.  I loved everything about the reception ~ it was elegant without being stuffy and classy without being showy.  This was due in part to mom Ellice's good taste but also to the talents of one of my favorite event planners, Carin Lomax.  It was another event Carin planned where I thought, 'Yep, this is how I want my own kids' bar/bat mitzvahs to look and feel'. It also helped that the reception room had an entire wall of windows and the day was sunny and bright.  Not ideal for the DJ but great for the photographer.

Below are just a few of the photos from the day(s). Katherine was a dream come true to photograph ~ with her porcelain skin I simply couldn't take a bad photo of her.  My favorite photo?  The black and white one of Katherine, her mom, big sister and younger brother during the reception; the four of them have a connection that was clear and true.

Thanks, Halpern/Barnes family for allowing me to capture the day for you!
