Evan's Bar Mitzvah
I photographed Evan’s space-themed bar mitzvah last weekend at the Clarendon Ballroom in Virginia. It was another first for me - in all my years of photographing mitzvahs, I’ve never seen a space theme. Holly did a great job keeping the theme modern instead of kitchsy.
Apparently Even isn’t just into space, though - during her speech, his mother, Holly, mentioned that Evan has a very curious mind so much so that they have a place in their house for him to take things apart and see how they are built (I’ve always wished I could be that kind of mom but, nope).
Like most 13-year-olds, Evan wasn’t thrilled about having his photo taken during our synagogue session (he was a good sport and tried to humor me). At the reception, though, he danced a bit and laughed and even went up in the chair for the hora; I loved seeing him smiling and enjoying himself (and I know a large part of that was because of emcee Happy from Washington Talent who kept up the energy).
(Speaking of the hora - this was only the 2nd mitzvah I’ve photographed where the dad fell out of the chair. It was scary for a second and then really, really funny. I’m glad you’re ok, Rick!).
In his speech for his service, Evan spoke about wanting to change the world by inventing something or finding a cure for cancer. He ended it by saying something along the lines of, “I’d better get going because I have a lot to do!”. And I believe it. Remember this kid :)
Thank you, Holly, Rick, Leah and Evan for allowing me to capture this special evening for your family - I hope you enjoy the sneak peek!
