Finding the Moments That Define Your Event

Max's Bar Mitzvah

(My last two bar mitzvahs have both been for kids named Max and it turns out they are good friends)

I'm behind posting about Max's bar mitzvah because of Thanksgiving. I photographed the Blacksten family on November 18. It had been about a year and a half since I'd seen Deborah and her husband, John, but they were just as I remembered: sweet, good-humored and laid back. Turns out the only member of their family I hadn't already met was Max himself. Deborah reminded me that her daughter, Rebecca, had been mitzvah partners with the son of another client of mine (Hi Susan) and that I'd snapped a few photos of the two of them together a few years ago.

Max's bar mitzvah was at the Westin Arlington Gateway. I photographed another bar mitzvah there back in October and have to give credit to my favorite event planning company, Events Extraordinaire, and their incredible team: the ballroom was set up completely different from the last time I was there which allowed me to shoot from different angles and locations. Thanks, ladies!

The reception was baseball-themed but they also had a virtual sports screen and a photo booth. The kids played trivia games, some sort of hula hoop/dice game that I didn't understand (am I that old?) and of course, Coke and Pepsi. The adults danced. And danced and danced and danced. It was a relaxed, festive reception and seemed to suit Max perfectly.

Thank you, Deborah, John, Rebecca and Max - you guys made my job easy and I loved celebrating with you. Enjoy your sneak peek!
