why not?

why can’t bar and bat mitzvah photography be as stunning and as visually arresting as high-end wedding photography?  just a few years ago, people would look at you sympathetically when you told them you were a wedding photographer (“what?  you’re not good enough to get a real photography gig?’).  wedding photography was staid and stale and posed and just plain tired looking.  and then something changed.  someone, somewhere, decided that perfectly posed bridal parties with no personality weren’t good enough anymore.  and the industry followed.

it’s sort of the same thing now, with b’nai mitzvah photography (still considered by most in the industry as the lowest of the lows).  but why does it have to be that way?  why can’t we have photographs of the talit that have the same visual importance as a bride’s bouquet?  or photos of the bat mitzvah’s dress hanging from the doorway.  a b’nai mitzvah is no less important than a wedding and maybe it’s time the photography started reflecting that.

[ kaplan bar mitzvah portraits ]

i had the great priviledge of photographing a friend’s son’s bar mitzvah this past weekend.  one thing i particularly liked is that ellen wanted to do a casual family portrait session the day before the event instead of doing family formals on the bimah the day of.  it was very relaxed, in their back yard, and only took about 40 minutes. i love the results; no, there aren’t traditional photos on the bimah but these really reflect the spirit and love of this family:

(please be patient; this is a large file and may take a few minutes to download)

These are amazing. You can see the love and feel the joy. Just, wow.

the last of the flash (for now…)

emilee was my last off-camera flash guinea pig and she was fantastic.  i’ve been photographing her and her family for a few years now and i’ve always meant to have her come model for me.  she has a serenity and calmness about her that comes across in photos and i’m going to be using one of these photos (don’t know which one, yet) as a sample in my studio.  thanks, emilee!

photographer tshirts

saw these on a blog/forum i’m a member of and had to post.  they are from a company named red bubble and they have some really fun tshirts.

you probably won’t get them if you’re not a photographer but then inside jokes are half the fun:
