Shit Photojournalists Like

i majored in print journalism when i was in college.  i thought i was going to be a writer: traveling the globe, covering wars and famine and bringing to light all the injustices of this cruel world. i would make people care.

instead i’m a mom to two, wife to one, dog owner and suburban home owner.  my kids play sports and take piano and guitar lessons.  i fret about the price of organic food and the 35lbs i’ve gained since having my second child more than 6 years ago.

there is not a heck of a lot of excitement or danger or thrill in my life and mostly i’m ok with that. would i really trade a globetrotting job for kate and jack? (sometimes. when they’ve been out of school for a few days.)

but sometimes when i see an amazing photograph from another part of the world i think it would have been cool to be the one to have captured it.  to have been the one to have taken such an amazing/uncomfortable/heartbreaking/arresting photograph that a suburban mom reading the news on her ipad over her morning cup of coffee would stop to think about life beyond her world.

alexis lost her fight yesterday.  i am heartbroken and without words.

he was only here a few days and we didn’t do much of anything except catch up and eat and have a few drinks but it was good. his last day here he asked me to take a few photos of him and his dog, zuki (‘zoo-key’. so named because they were harvesting zuchinni on the farm when she was born). it was freeze your ass off cold so we ran outside for only a few minutes, snapped a few frames, and ran back inside.  all told, i’m happy with what we got.

i’ve known jaki for many years and have taken her annual holiday card photo for almost all of them. but an extended family portrait? when her husband is ken ulman (the howard county executive) and her brother-in-law is doug ulman (the president & CEO of lance armstrong’s livestrong foundation)?

yeah.

no pressure showing up to a family portrait session like that.

as ridiculous as it sounds, i was nervous heading over to her in-laws’ home.  i’ve been there many times but it was the pressure of having to get *the* family photo since doug and his (new!) fiancee, amy grace, were only in town from austin for a few days.

thankfully the entire family is photogenic and ken and doug, especially, are so used to having their photos taken that it was about 100x easier than a regular family portrait.  i didn’t have to cajole or coax or coach anyone how to sit or ask them to look at the camera.  at the end of the day it ended up being just like any other session: trying to capture the sense of connection and love they share.

hey guys ~ just a heads up that we will officially be closed between december 24 and january 1.  megan will be celebrating christmas with her family and i will be carrying on the age old jewish tradition of going to the movies and eating chinese food for dinner.

we will not be checking email or voice mail but you are free to send either and we will get back to you in 2011.
